Maya Jama is one of the most talked-about celebrities right now, whose rise to fame is nothing short of amazing. The television presenter, who was born in Bristol and attended Cotham School, has landed the hottest job of them all and became the host of Love Island in 2023. But how did she go from a tough upbringing, not being able to afford necessities like food and electric, to having a jet-setting lifestyle and career? Here’s a look at Maya Jama’s incredible journey.
Breakthrough and success
She landed her first presenter role for JumpOff.TV, where she hosted weekly music video countdowns. She then moved on to Sky UK and worked on TRACE Sports. In 2014, she hosted Maya’s FIFA World Cup Cities for Copa90. A travelogue covering the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. She also joined MTV as a presenter and hosted various shows such as The Wrap Up and True Love or True Lies.
In 2017, Maya Jama made history by becoming the youngest ever person to co-host the MOBO Awards at just 23 years old. She also joined BBC Radio 1 and presented its Greatest Hits segment on Saturdays and co-presented every Friday with Scott Mills and Chris Stark. She then went on to host her own show on Fridays and Saturdays.
In 2019, she won the NTA Award for Best Presenter for her work on The Circle. She also launched her own skincare brand, MIJ Masks, which are made for “every face and any moment”. She has also modelled for brands such as Adidas, Gap, Maybelline, PrettyLittleThing, and JD Sports.
Love Island and beyond; Maya Jama’s rise to success
In 2023, Maya Jama became presenter of Love Island, replacing Laura Whitmore who stepped down after two series. Maya said she was thrilled to be the new face of the reality dating show, which is one of the most popular programme in the UK. She said: “I’m so excited to be hosting Love Island this year. It’s such an iconic show and I’ve been a fan since day one. I can’t wait to meet the new islanders and see all the drama unfold.”
Maya Jama has also been in a few high-profile relationships, most notably with rapper Stormzy, whom she dated for four years before splitting in 2019. She has since been linked to basketball player Ben Simmons and actor Michael B. Jordan, but has stated that she is “really, really single” and focusing on her career.
