He was accused of and charged with headbutting former lover Kate Greville and elbowing her younger sister Emma in the jaw during a violent final confrontation at the end of the “toxic, damaging” relationship.

John Terry

The incident occurred on 23 October 2011, when Chelsea visited QPR at Loftus Road. The match was tense and heated, with Chelsea having two players sent off and losing 1-0 to their rivals. In the 85th minute, John Terry and Anton Ferdinand clashed over a penalty appeal, and exchanged insults and gestures. Terry was caught on camera saying “f**k off, f**k off … f**king black c**t, f**king kno*head” to Ferdinand. Terry claimed that he was only repeating what he thought Ferdinand had accused him of saying. He received a four-game ban and a £220,000 fine from the Football Association (FA).

Cristiano Ronaldo

Kathryn Mayorga accused Cristiano Ronaldo of assaulting her in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009. Ronaldo agreed to pay $375,000 (around £270,000) to Mayorga, who could not publicly discuss the allegations in return. She filed a lawsuit against Ronaldo in 2018, seeking to void the settlement and nondisclosure agreement she signed in 2010. She says Ronaldo’s team coerced her into signing it and that she was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder at the time. Ronaldo has not commented on the appeal, but his lawyers have previously said that he “vehemently denies all of the allegations” and that the encounter with Mayorga was “consensual.”

In 2019, US prosecutors said they would not charge Cristiano Ronaldo over the accusations as they could not “be proven beyond reasonable doubt.

Jon Flanagan

He assaulted his girlfriend on a night out and received a 12-month community order. Liverpool Crown Court heard that he attacked Wall outside a restaurant in Liverpool city center on 22 December 2017. CCTV footage showed him hitting Wall before pushing her against a wall twice and then kicking her. A witness who saw the incident from his flat shouted at him that he was “out of order” and he replied with a threat.

The couple later rekindled their relationship.

Sven-Göran Eriksson

He is a Swedish football manager and former player who has coached in ten countries, including England, Mexico and the Philippines. He has also faced his share of scandal.

Sven had an affair with Faria Alam, a secretary at the Football Association, while he was still the England manager. A tabloid newspaper exposed the affair in 2004 and it caused a media frenzy. He survived a vote of confidence by the FA board but it damaged his reputation.

An undercover reporter posing as a wealthy Arab businessman secretly recorded him in 2006. He discussed his future plans after the World Cup and made disparaging remarks about some of his players and other managers. The News of the World published the recording and it caused a public outcry. He said the reporter had misled and betrayed him and that his comments were taken out of context.

The Qatar World Cup

Qatar bribed FIFA officials to secure the votes to host the World Cup, according to one of the main allegations against it. A US Department of Justice indictment released in April 2020 claimed that Qatari officials paid millions of dollars in bribes to former FIFA executives in exchange for their support. The indictment also alleged that Qatar’s rivals, such as Russia, Morocco, and South Africa, paid other FIFA officials.

Qatar has denied any wrongdoing and said the allegations are based on “rumors and hearsay”. FIFA has also said it has found no evidence of corruption in the bidding process. However, some critics have questioned FIFA’s credibility and transparency, given its own history of scandals and reforms.
