Jurgen Klopp confirmed in a press conference on Tuesday that Jota faces a long stint on the touchlines, keeping him out of Portugal’s World Cup squad.

“Not good news, about Diogo, he will miss the World Cup, pretty serious injury in the calf muscle,” the Liverpool boss said. “The process starts from now. Says Klopp

Jota was forced to leave the pitch on a stretcher and subsequent tests have confirmed that his calf injury will rule him out of Portugal’s World Cup squad in Qatar, which begins next month.

When asked how long Jota will be sidelined, Klopp said: ‘Big impact, so now we can say that because he will be out for a long time.

‘We’re talking about months, we will see. I don’t want to put a number on it because I always hope in the middle of the rehab all of a sudden there’s a positive development and we can cut days off the rehab phase. But it will be long.’

A downcast Jota tweeted an updated to his loyal supporters:

‘After such a good night at Anfield mine ended in the worst way ! In the last minute one of my dreams collapsed 💔
I will be one more supporting from the outside, club and country, and fighting to be back as soon as possible 🙏
You’ll Never Walk Alone’

Jota has scored 34 goals in 88 games since his start at Liverpool in September 2020. But, despite the sale of Sadio Mane, competition for places in attack have increased since the January signing of Luis Diaz and the summer signing of Darwin Nunez.
