What is Acne?

Acne, or Acne vulgaris, is a very common skin condition that affects many people at some point in their lives. It often develops during teenage years, but can be present well into adulthood, and tends to affect the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders.

There are many different causes for acne, from extra oily skin. When glands near the surface of the skin produce too much sebum. Sebum is a oil designed to lubricate your skin and stop it from drying out. This excess sebum then builds up along with dead skin cells and plugs the pores. Once blocked, pores can become infected, resulting in acne.

Acne

One of the most common is changes in hormone levels. This explains why acne presents during adolescence. Acne can also occur as an adverse side effect to certain medications. For instance birth control.

non inflammatory acne such as blackheads and whiteheads are the most commonly known acne type. Blackheads are hair follicles (or pores) that are clogged with a mix of dead skin cells and oil. They usually appear on the nose, chin and forehead. It may look as if dirt is clogging the pore, but its actually the pigmentation of the hair follicle making it appear dark in colour. Whiteheads are similar to blackheads but are closed off.

How is acne treated?

For spontaneous out breaks of acne, over the counter treatments may be the best option. Drug store treatments are less harsh, and ideal for continual use. Or as part of your daily skin care routine. In addition over the counter treatments maybe cheaper, depending on the product.

Mild body acne can be treated with gentle body washes such as sanex. I also advise for conditioner to be thoroughly rinsed when washing hair in the shower. You can also apply aloe vera to calm your skin during breakouts.
